Welcome to the Official VCH site!

Village Cheese House has been Palo Alto's premier seller of cheese, fine foods, and gourmet culinary products since its inception over 50 years ago. Owned by the Staehnke family from 1959 through 2007, the torch has been passed to us, the Hiken family, who are honored to carry on the tradition. It's our goal to provide unique, high quality specialty foods and artisanal cheeses in a casual and inviting atmosphere.

Then again, VCH is much more than a gourmet food store. Our full-service deli has been making the Peninsula's favorite sandwiches for more than 50 years. The double-decker Old Fashioned sandwich is a tradition at countless happenings from weddings, to business meetings, to Stanford sporting events. We are often the first stop for people returning to town, and if you haven't had a sandwich with our Original Spread, we encourage you to make your way to our little corner of the world asap!

On this site you can get all the info you need about the services we offer, see our menus, and find out about upcoming events. You can even learn new recipes submitted by VCH employees and customers, made with items they got from our store. Yum!

We look forward to seeing you soon...

Barbara's Favorite Garden Salad

  • Coleman's Mustard Powder
  • Unio Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Monte Pollino White Wine Vinegar
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • salt
  • salad greens
In a wooden salad bowl, grind garlic with a pestle and mix thoroughly with 1/4 tsp of salt. When the garlic and salt have been combined into a paste, mix in 2 tbsp of white wine vinegar. Next add 1/2 - 3/4 tsp of Coleman's and mix thoroughly so the garlic and mustard powder are evenly distributed. Finally, stir in 4 tbls of EVOO and spread mixture over the entire bottom of the salad bowl.

Once you've completed the dressing, you may add in the greens of your choice - Barbara likes butter lettuce or romaine - and toss lightly. By making the dressing in the bottom of the bowl, you can get a light coating over all the greens rather than having too of a heavy portion on the top. Delicious!
